End the Israeli Occupation

Image

Dear Sir,

I was honored when my dear friend and inspiring colleague Anna Baltzer asked me to write a few words on what the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation means to us in the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) National Committee (BNC). As the largest coalition of U.S. organizations working for the comprehensive, UN-stipulated rights of the Palestinian people and towards ending U.S. complicity in Israel’s regime of occupation, colonization and apartheid which denies those rights, the US Campaign is simply the BNC’s most important strategic ally and partner in the U.S.

The widely recognized growth of the BDS movement and its impact across the U.S. today can be largely credited to US Campaign-affiliated organizations and groups. The US Campaign and its affiliates are home to many of the brightest, most principled and sophisticated human rights activists promoting Palestinian freedom, justice and equality in everyday U.S. towns and cities, churches and interfaith groups, in academic associations, on campuses, among cultural workers and far beyond.

In a few days, as we receive the New Year, many of us will look back at 2013 and remember the horrors of Israel's ongoing siege of Gaza; loved ones who were victimized by Israel's relentless belligerence and criminal actions; homes that were demolished; and whole Palestinian communities who were ethnically cleansed and others who are waiting for the all-too-familiar yet still chilling guillotine to fall.

But many of us in the BDS movement will also remember 2013 as the year when Stephen Hawking decided to respect our boycott picket line and boycott a conference in Israel and the Asian-American Studies Association, the American Studies Association, the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association and the Association for Humanist Sociology joined the academic boycott of Israel; when SodaStream felt the heat of boycotts and protests worldwide, including by the first U.S. interfaith boycott coalition; when the French company and occupation profiteer Veolia was compelled to both terminate its settlement bus lines services on West Bank apartheid roads and to withdraw from a major project in the U.S. under pressure from a broad coalition of groups in St. Louis, and retirement giant TIAA-CREF divested its own Social Choice Fund from Veolia; and when Students for Justice in Palestine across the U.S. succeeded in passing student council resolutions supporting divestment from companies involved in Israel's occupation and violations of human rights.

In so many of these bright instances, the US Campaign helped provide critical leadership and/or supported its affiliates holding the torch. But the US Campaign cannot continue its work without the support of people like you.

EU support for Israeli crimes

121015- Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman at an EU press.conference.jpg

EU support for Israeli crimes makes it unworthy of Nobel Peace Prize

15 October 2012

The European Union is not “merely hypocritical” in its relationship with Israel, it is “complicit in crimes against the Palestinian people.” This is one of the main conclusions of David Cronin’s compellingly-argued book Europe’s Alliance With Israel: Aiding the Occupation.

In fact, the European Union is steadily upgrading its relations with Israel while overwhelming, and growing, public majorities across Europe’s largest nations view Israel “mostly negatively.” According to a recent BBC GlobeScan poll, Israel is on a par with North Korea as the third worst perceived country in the world (“Views of Europe slide sharply in global poll, while views of China improve,” GlobeScan, 10 May).

With the entrenchment of its occupation, colonization and apartheid against the Palestinians, its fanatic-right government’s hubristic and bellicose policies, and the impressive growth of the non-violent Palestinian-led, global boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian rights, Israel is gradually losing hearts and minds across the world and becoming the world pariah, as South Africa once was, during apartheid.

Desmond Tutu, the South African archbishop, is particularly eloquent in accusing Israel of the crime of apartheid (“Tutu condemns Israeli ‘apartheid’,” BBC News, 29 April 2002). The Russell Tribunal on Palestine — at its 2011 Cape Town session — determined that Israel is practicing apartheid against the entire Palestinian people, according to the definition of apartheid adopted by the UN in 1973 (“Findings of the South African session,” Russell Tribunal on Palestine, 5-7 November 2011 [PDF]).

Worse than South Africa

South African Christian leaders who played a decisive role in fighting apartheid have condemned Israel’s apartheid as “even worse than South African apartheid” (“An Easter message from South Africa to Palestine,” Oikumene, 31 March 2010). And the publisher of Haaretz, an influential Israeli daily, has recently described a fanatic Israeli ideology of “territorial seizure and apartheid” (“The necessary elimination of Israeli democracy,” 25 November 2011).

Increasingly, international jurists, human rights organizations and activists, as well as international public opinion are recognizing Israel’s unique regime of oppression against the Palestinians as encompassing the crime of apartheid, in addition to occupation, ethnic cleansing and settler colonialism.

With its continued siege of Gaza; its untamed construction of illegal colonies and an apartheid wall in the occupied West Bank, especially in and around Jerusalem; its “strategy of Judaization” in Jerusalem, the Galilee, the Jordan Valley and the Naqab (Negev); its adoption of new racist laws and its denial of the UN-stipulated right of the Palestinian refugees to return to their homes from which they were ethnically cleansed during the Nakba, Israel has embarked on a more belligerent and violent phase in its attempt to extinguish the question of Palestine through literally “disappearing” the Palestinians, as Edward Said would say.

Prison camp

The most criminal and pressing aspect of Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians is without doubt its Western and Egyptian-backed hermetic siege of the occupied Gaza Strip, which even British Prime Minister David Cameron has described as a “prison camp” (“David Cameron: Israeli blockade has turned Gaza Strip into a ‘prison camp’,” The Guardian, 27 July 2010). The systematic Israeli targeting of Gaza’s water and sanitation facilities has compounded an already “severe and protracted denial of human dignity,” according to Maxwell Gaylard, the UN humanitarian coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory, causing “a steep decline in standards of living for the [Palestinians] of Gaza, characterized by erosion of livelihoods, destruction and degradation of basic structure, and a marked downturn in the delivery and quality of vital services in health, water and sanitation” (“Humanitarian organizations deeply concerned about the ongoing water and sanitation crisis in Gaza,” Association of International Development Agencies, 3 September 2009).

A 2009 report by Amnesty International affirmed that, “90–95 percent of the water supply [in Gaza] is contaminated and unfit for human consumption” (“Troubled waters: Palestinians denied fair access to water,” October 2009 [PDF]).

The report cites an earlier study by the UN Environmental Programme which correlates the widespread contamination of Gaza’s water resources to the rise in nitrate levels in the groundwater “far above the WHO [World Health Organization] accepted guideline,” inducing a potentially lethal blood disorder in young children and newborns called methemoglobinaemia, or the “blue babies” phenomenon.

Some of the detected symptoms of this disease in Gaza infants include “blueness around the mouth, hands and feet,” “episodes of diarrhea and vomiting,” and “loss of consciousness.” “Convulsions and death can occur” at higher levels of nitrate contamination, the report concludes (“Environmental assessment of the Gaza Strip following the escalation of hostilities in December 2008-January 2009,” September 2009 [PDF].)

At the conclusion of Israel’s war of aggression on Gaza in late 2008 and early 2009, which led to more than 1,400 deaths, mostly civilians, EU leaders dashed to occupied Jerusalem to celebrate with Israel’s then prime minister Ehud Olmert, promising to support Israel in fighting “terror” (“World leaders push for lasting truce in Gaza,” The New York Times, 18 January 2009).

So, when the European Union, which is still actively colluding to maintain the Gaza siege, launches a relatively expensive public relations campaign all over Gaza — and the West Bank — with its main slogan, “Your Priorities are ours,” without a hint of sarcasm, it seems to be sending the Palestinians under occupation two blunt messages: first, we could not care less about your loss of human lives, freedoms and dignity, and second, “We set the priorities, you adopt them as yours, or else we cut funding” (“The priorities of the European Union are not ours,” MWC News, 18 July 2011).

Palestine: Israel is 'deeply grateful to the United States'

card.jpg

1) On November 15, 2010, U.S. President Barack Obama praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for urging his cabinet to accept a U.S. proposal to extend a freeze on West Bank settlement building for 90 days. Under the plan, Washington would block UN resolutions critical of Israel, and supply Israel with fighter jets worth $3 billion. The US government also promised Israel that after the 90-day moratorium, they would not seek an extension, and settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem (all of which is illegal under international law) could continue unabated.

2) In February 2011, more than 100 nations voted for a U.N. resolution that would have condemned illegal Israeli settlements and halted any new construction. The United States vetoed it.

3) On February 19, 2011, Israel said it was 'deeply grateful to the United States' after it vetoed a United Nations resolution put forward by the Palestinian leadership condemning Israeli settlement activity.

4) On  Oct 27, 2011, Israeli jetfighters engaged in aerial bombing of the Palestinian city of Khan Yunes in the Gaza Strip.

IDF commander: 'We fired more than a million cluster bombs in Lebanon.'

Phosphorous and cluster bombs heavily used; unexploded munitions litter wide area of Lebanon...

--

Sep.12, 2006

"What we did was insane and monstrous, we covered entire towns in cluster bombs," the head of an IDF rocket unit in Lebanon said regarding the use of cluster bombs and phosphorous shells during the war.

Quoting his battalion commander, the rocket unit head stated that the IDF fired around 1,800 cluster bombs, containing over 1.2 million cluster bomblets.

In addition, soldiers in IDF artillery units testified that the army used phosphorous shells during the war, widely forbidden by international law. According to their claims, the vast majority of said explosive ordinance was fired in the final 10 days of the war.

The rocket unit commander stated that Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) platforms were heavily used in spite of the fact that they were known to be highly inaccurate.

MLRS is a track or tire carried mobile rocket launching platform, capable of firing a very high volume of mostly unguided munitions. The basic rocket fired by the platform is unguided and imprecise, with a range of about 32 kilometers. The rockets are designed to burst into sub-munitions at a planned altitude in order to blanket enemy army and personnel on the ground with smaller explosive rounds.

The use of such weaponry is controversial mainly due to its inaccuracy and ability to wreak great havoc against indeterminate targets over large areas of territory, with a margin of error of as much as 1,200 meters from the intended target to the area hit.

The cluster rounds which don't detonate on impact, believed by the United Nations to be around 40% of those fired by the IDF in Lebanon, remain on the ground as unexploded munitions, effectively littering the landscape with thousands of land mines which will continue to claim victims long after the war has ended.

Because of their high level of failure to detonate, it is believed that there are around 500,000 unexploded munitions on the ground in Lebanon. To date 12 Lebanese civilians have been killed by these mines since the end of the war.

According to the commander, in order to compensate for the inaccuracy of the rockets and the inability to strike individual targets precisely, units would "flood" the battlefield with munitions, accounting for the littered and explosive landscape of post-war Lebanon.

When his reserve duty came to a close, the commander in question sent a letter to Defense Minister Amir Peretz outlining the use of cluster munitions, a letter which has remained unanswered.

'Excessive injury and unnecessary suffering'

It has come to light that IDF soldiers fired phosphorous rounds in order to cause fires in Lebanon. An artillery commander has admitted to seeing trucks loaded with phosphorous rounds on their way to artillery crews in the north of Israel.

A direct hit from a phosphorous shell typically causes severe burns and a slow, painful death.

International law forbids the use of weapons that cause "excessive injury and unnecessary suffering", and many experts are of the opinion that phosphorous rounds fall directly in that category.

The International Red Cross has determined that international law forbids the use of phosphorous and other types of flammable rounds against personnel, both civilian and military.

IDF: No violation of international law

In response, the IDF Spokesman's Office stated that "International law does not include a sweeping prohibition of the use of cluster bombs. The convention on conventional weaponry does not declare a prohibition on [phosphorous weapons], rather, on principles regulating the use of such weapons.

"For understandable operational reasons, the IDF does not respond to [accounts of] details of weaponry in its possession.

"The IDF makes use only of methods and weaponry which are permissible under international law. Artillery fire in general, including MLRS fire, were used in response solely to firing on the state of Israel."

The Defense Minister's office said it had not received messages regarding cluster bomb fire.

'Turkey is a terrorist State...'

As a reminder:

Israeli official to Clinton: 'Declare Turkey a terror-supporting state'

2 September 2011

A hawkish Israeli politician reportedly wrote a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday, asking the US to declare Turkey a terror-supporting state, the Jerusalem Post reported early on Friday.

Danny Danon, who is also deputy Knesset speaker, wrote a letter to Clinton after Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu warned Israel to apologize until the UN releases its report in which he called on Washington to impose sanctions on Turkey and call it a terror-supporting state.

"Turkey has gotten closer to Iran and constitutes a direct continuation of the axis of evil. The government in Washington must answer the Turkish problem before it is too late," Danon wrote, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The Israeli official called for economic and diplomatic sanctions against Turkey until Ankara changes its ways and abandons what he said “the way of terror.”

"The Turks have crossed the line. They supported the flotilla, they support terror and they dare to ask Israel to apologize to them," Danon said.

Note: US. president Obama signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for terrorist attacks in Syria. Obama’s order, approved earlier this year and known as an "intelligence finding,” broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the terrorists oust the Syrian government. C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey. The weapons, including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons, are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The United States is setting up joint military, intelligence and medical working teams with Israel, Turkey and Jordan. On October 4, 2012, Adm. George Stavridis, the commander of US European Command (USEUCOM) and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), met with Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Ozel in Ankara. The meeting took place at General Staff headquarters but was only announced to the public in a statement released by the General Staff some days later. The talks were closed to the press and the statement did not elaborate on what Stavridis and Ozel discussed. It proves once again that the Turkish government is not only arming Syrian terrorists but organizes with its NATO allies (with Israel in the background) also a real war against Syria.

'Syria-Turkey Fighting Continues'

'Syrian mortar fire again strikes a Turkish border village, prompting artillery retaliation for the fourth day'

10/7/2012 - Syrian mortar fire again struck a Turkish border village on Sunday, prompting artillery retaliation for the fourth day, AFP reported.

The Syrian mortar round hit Akcakale, the site of a similar strike on Wednesday, as Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said President Bashar al-Assad should be replaced by Vice President Faruq al-Shara.

The mortar round hit the grounds of a public building without causing casualties, Turkey's NTV news channel reported, adding that the building had been evacuated beforehand.

That incident caused a spike in tensions between the former allies and renewed fears of a broader conflict.

Turkey's parliament on Thursday gave the government the green light to use military force against Syria if necessary.

IOA isolates hunger striker Shalabi in Jewish homicide ward

JENIN, February 27, 2012 (PIC) – The Israeli Hasharon prison administration has moved hunger striker Hana’a Shalabi to an isolation cell in the midst of Jewish female homicide convicts.

Palestinian human rights sources said that the step served as a penal measure against Shalabi for insisting on continuing in her strike.

Shalabi, 29, told her lawyer on Sunday that she would continue in her hunger strike as the only available means to attain her rights.

The lawyer quoted the detainee as saying that the administrative detention against her was a capital punishment and not an administrative custody.

He said that she was brutally beaten on her arrest then sentenced without any charge to six months administrative custody, which prompted her to go on hunger strike.

The lawyer said that the soldiers ordered her to strip for search but she refused and was beaten for her refusal, adding that she was suffering from pain in the head and all over her body because of the beating.

He said that Shalabi wants an end to her detention and punishment for those who beat her in order to end her strike.

Shalabi, on her 12th day of hunger strike, has demanded the intervention of the Egyptian authorities since Cairo was the one that patronized the prisoners’ exchange deal between Hamas and Israel by which she was released and by which she should not be re-arrested.

Palestinian resistance: Khadar Adnan

adnan-3.jpgKhader Adnan is now for 66 days on hunger strike against his detention without charge or trial...
In a letter he gave to his lawyers for public release, Adnan explained why he was on hunger strike:
'The Israeli occupation has gone to extremes against our people, especially prisoners. I have been humiliated, beaten, and harassed by interrogators for no reason, and thus I swore to God I would fight the policy of administrative detention to which I and hundreds of my fellow prisoners fell prey ... The only thing I can do is offer my soul to God, as I believe righteousness and justice will eventually triumph over tyranny and oppression. I hereby assert that I am confronting the occupiers not for my own sake as an individual, but for the sake of thousands of prisoners who are being deprived of their simplest human rights while the world and international community look on. It is time the international community and the UN support prisoners and force the State of Israel to respect international human rights and stop treating prisoners as if they were not humans'.

UN responsible for the creation of an ‘ethnically homogeneous’ Israel

On the request of Tel Aviv and Washington, the UN blocks all the resolutions critical of Israel. Thus the UN is also reponsible for the realization of Israel’s plan to create a State ethnically homogeneous from the Mediterranean Sea until the Jordan…
———
On November 15, 2010, U.S.
On February 19, 2011, Israel said it was deeply grateful to the United States after it vetoed a United Nations resolution put forward by the Palestinian leadership condemning Israeli settlement activity.

Since 2001, Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs and leader of Israel’s far right party, Avigdor Lieberman, proposes to establish four townships in the occupied West Bank, hermetically sealed, which would be grouped the Palestinians. He sees it as a solution for the Palestinian citizens of Israel, who are more than one million, to move the vast majority of the group in tightly closed, self-administered areas.
Thus would arise a State ethnically homogeneous from the Mediterranean Sea until the Jordan, sheltering in its midst Palestinian “Bantustans”.

The war against Libya: the role of Israel

waragainst Libya, bombings NATO, role of Israel

Some weeks ago the Libyan NATO-rebels said that they will recognise Israel and that “the future regime will maintain normal relations with other democratic countries, including Israel.”
Libya is among the World’s largest oil economies with approximately 3.5% of global oil reserves, more than twice those of the US.
“Operation Libya” is part of the broader military agenda in the Middle East and Central Asia which consists in gaining control and corporate ownership over more than sixty percent of the world’s reserves of oil and natural gas, including oil and gas pipeline routes.

United Nations and NATO 'protect' civilians with terror weapons

Israeli Luftwaffe

Many innocent civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan an Libya are killed by so called drones. The drone is an unmanned aircraft designed by Israel.   The Israelis are denied entry into Afghanistan, but nevertheless, Israel provide ‘security’ for the coalition in Afghanistan. Israeli drones are used by Canada, France, Australia and Germany in Afghanistan. Today, Israeli specialists are on the air base at Ein Shemer for training the flight of “Herons” repainted in the colors of Germany.

The idea of the drone is partly based on the V-1 and V-2 rocket that Germany used to bomb London. In total, the V-1 attacks caused 22,892 casualties (almost entirely civilians).  Of more than 10,000 V-1 launched, 7488 reached England, 3957 were destroyed and only 3531 reached London. More than six thousand civilians were killed and eighteen thousand were wounded. The 1150 V-2 that landed in London killed 2,742 civilians and wounded 6467. The total property damage was 23,000 houses totally destroyed and 100,000 damaged while the RAF lost 490 aircraft.

Omar Suleiman and the torture of Pakistanis

Omar Suleiman, who was Egypt’s vice-president for a short time,  was Mubarak’s intelligence chief and close confidant of nearly two decades.

Suleiman graduated from Egypt’s prestigious Military Academy but also received training in the Soviet Union. Under his guidance, Egyptian intelligence has worked hand-in-glove with the CIA’s counterterrorism programs, most notably in the 2003 rendition from Italy of an al-Qaeda suspect known as Abu Omar.
The Norweigan newspaper Aftenposten, Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Gilad, head of the Israeli Defense Ministry’s Diplomatic-Security Bureau, secretly visited Suleiman in September 2005. Gilad then reported on the visit to US diplomats in Tel Aviv.  The US embassy in Tel Aviv wrote that Suleiman opposed Hamas because of fears that Islamic leadership in Gaza would strengthen the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
In 2009, Foreign Policy magazine ranked Suleiman as the Middle East’s most powerful intelligence chief, ahead of Mossad chief Meir Dagan.
Shortly after 9/11, Australian citizen Mamdouh Habib was captured by Pakistani security forces and, under US pressure, tortured by Pakistanis. He was then rendered (with an Australian diplomat watching) by CIA operatives to Egypt, a not uncommon practice. In Egypt, Habib merited Suleiman’s personal attention.
As related byRichard Neville, based on Habib’s memoir: ‘Habib was interrogated by the country’s Intelligence Director, General Omar Suleiman … Suleiman took a personal interest in anyone suspected of links with Al-Qaeda. As Habib had visited Afghanistan shortly before 9/11, he was under suspicion. Habib was repeatedly zapped with high-voltage electricity, immersed in water up to his nostrils, beaten, his fingers were broken and he was hung from metal hooks.
That treatment wasn’t enough for Suleiman, so:
To loosen Habib’s tongue, Suleiman ordered a guard to murder a gruesomely shackled Turkistan prisoner in front of Habib — and he did, with a vicious karate kick.

Libyan peace talks blocked by the U.S.

Len McCluskey: Libyan intervention should be halted and peace talks should be launched

6/4/2011 - The attack on Libya by British, French and US forces is wrong and should be halted without any further delay or futile loss of life, Len McCluskey, general secretary of Unite the Union, considers.

In his article published by The Guardian McCluskey writes: “I believe the present military intervention is a mistake which shows the lessons of Iraq have still not been learned.” Prolonging the conflict will surely lead to more civilian deaths at the hands of troops on both sides, in addition to those directly caused by the bombing, according to the author. The present action raises the alternative possibility of escalation, leading to military occupation of all or part of Libya. Similar occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown how disastrous and counter-productive such interventions are, McCluskey reminds. “Escalation and "boots on the ground" will cost British soldiers' lives and will once more stoke up hostility to Britain across the Middle East and the Muslim world,” the author warns.

Rather than pumping up a civil war, coalition-members should be joining others in pushing for a ceasefire followed by international assistance in negotiating a better future for Libyans. “This could only lead to an extension of democracy in Libya at the very least, something that will be made harder by prolonged conflict” the author concludes.

Israel's ethnic cleansing plan

Since 2001, Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs and leader of Israel’s far right party, Avigdor Lieberman, proposes to establish four townships in the occupied West Bank, hermetically sealed, which would be grouped the Palestinians. He sees it as a solution for the Palestinian citizens of Israel, who are more than one million, to move the vast majority of the group in tightly closed, self-administered areas.
Thus would arise a State ethnically homogeneous from the Mediterranean Sea until the Jordan, sheltering in its midst Palestinian “Bantustans”.

Washington's support to ethnic cleansing and Apartheid of Israel

November 15, 2010 – ’U.S. President Barack Obama has praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for urging his cabinet to accept a U.S. proposal to extend a freeze on West Bank settlement building for 90 days. Under the plan, Washington would block UN resolutions critical of Israel, and supply Israel with fighter jets worth $3 billion. The US government also promised Israel that after the 90-day moratorium, they would not seek an extension, and settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem (all of which is illegal under international law) could continue unabated.’

Libya fights back: ship with aid for Gaza

Libya fights back: ship with aid for Gaza

Our Libyan Charity Foundation organized in June 2010 a ship with aid for Gaza. The ship was blocked by Israel, Greece (member of the NATO) and Egypt.
Greece and Egypt are closely related to the U.S. and Israel.
I don’t understand why everybody is demonizing my father. The U.S. are delivering for billions of dollars to Israel. Israel uses this money for weapons and air planes. All the U.N. resolutions critical of Israel. are actually blocked by the U.S. and its allies. That’s why Palestinian people are driven from their homes and why Gaza is bombed.

They accuse my father from bombing ‘his own people’…
In 1986 the US launched air strikes on Libya.
At least 100 people have died after USA planes bombed targets in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and the Benghazi region.

Bruxelles: Manifestation 'pour la paix en Libye'

'NiKhadafi,NIl'OTAN'.jpg

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/april/15/newsid_3975000/3975455.stm

No-fly zone Libya: role of Israel

It is clear that the Israeli government who does not speak of the genocide on the Palestinians, does not support Gaddafi.
This is not surprising. Israel is the main military ally of the United States, Great Britain and France who, for the reason of oil, want a complete control over the Middle East.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, seen here in 2009, has said he believes a no-fly zone should be imposed on Libya to stop a "danger of genocide".

AFP - Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon on Tuesday said he believed a no-fly zone should be imposed on Libya to stop a "danger of genocide".

Speaking at a conference in Brussels, Ayalon said international moves to impose a no-fly zone over Libya to stop Moamer Kadhafi using air strikes against his own people, had not been discussed by the Israeli government, but added:

"If you ask me personally, I think it should be imposed," he said.

There was "a danger of genocide" in Libya, he said.

"Morally we have to stop it", Ayalon said, adding "Its best to have the UN's okay."

US and European leaders have been weighing the use of NATO air power in a no-fly zone as Kadhafi fights a bloody rearguard action against encroaching rebels.

Palestinian people: collective punishment

village of Awarta.settlers.jpg

According to the village council of Awarta, 19 people are still in custody after the Israeli military raided the village. Yesterday, around 8 am, the Israeli military cut off the roads to the village, preventing anyone from entering or leaving.

------

...'When the soldiers entered the houses to arrest people they flipped over furniture, smashed windows, threw sound grenades and shot bullets in the air.

Around 3 pm the soldiers returned a second time to search houses of the families who’s sons had been arrested. They forced the families to stay outside under armed guards for an hour while about 20 soldiers with dogs entered their houses. As they had done in the morning, the soldiers turned the houses completely upside-down, destroying the electricity by cutting the cables to the fuse box, and polluting the drinking water by throwing mud in the water-tanks. Computers and phones were destroyed and money and property were stolen by the soldiers. Once again the soldiers threw sound grenades inside and outside the houses.

While the soldiers were searching the houses, the families, including women and small children, were forbidden to drink or eat.

It has been reported that an 80-year-old woman who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure was beaten by the soldiers. She was taken to the Rafidia hospital in Nablus.

The families of the men and boys that were arrested do not know where their sons, fathers, and brothers are or when they will come home.

Even though this kind of systematic collective punishment is illegal according to International law, is it frequently used by the Israeli military all over the West Bank and in Gaza.

American ‘peace talks’… ;)

ahmadinejad.jpg

Obama ridiculed again

When asked in about Israel’s plans for 1,000 housing units for a contested part of East Jerusalem, Mr. Obama said, “This kind of activity is never helpful when it comes to peace negotiations.” “I’m concerned that we’re not seeing each side make the extra effort involved to get a breakthrough,” the president added during his visit to Indonesia. “Each of these incremental steps can end up breaking trust.”
A few hours later, Mr. Netanyahu’s office responded with a statement, saying that “Jerusalem is not a settlement; Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Israel.”
