Salehi: Annan's Plan Hindered by the Americans, the West and Some Regional Countries

Aug 3, 2012 - TEHRAN, (SANA) - Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Friday said the Americans, the West and some regional countries have hindered the plan of UN envoy Kofi Annan to make it fail.

Salehi, in a press statement to the Iranian IRNA news agency, added that the Americans use the policy of projections and blaming others when it is they who have hampered Annan's plan.

" The Americans make projections and try to suggest their own opinion instead of the reality," Salehi was quoted as saying by IRNA, noting that the UN envoy clarified the reasons why he quit sometimes clearly and implicitly in other times.

He underscored that the Arab League and some regional and Western countries openly criticized Annan's six-point plan which had the approval of Syria and the influential parties in the region.

Salehi said these regional, Western and Arab sides did not want Annan to succeed and rejected any role of influential countries in the region in resolving the crisis in Syria.

He added that every time Annan succeeded in one area of solving the crisis, he would be faced by obstacles by the West and some regional countries.

"In general, Western countries and some regional countries did not want Mr. Annan's plan to succeed because in that case, they would not reach their goals," Salehi told IRNA.

He said that the UN envoy's plan stressed on the solution to the crisis to be a Syrian one without foreign dictates, adding that the Western and some regional countries have a delusion about the Syrian leadership leaving office.

"Mr. Annan's plan will continue since it is the best plan on the table," The Iranian Foreign Minister continued.

He expressed hope that Annan's successor takes an independent and unbiased stance and seeks to resolve the crisis in Syria.
