(belga/vsv)

Belgian unions VIEWPOINT

The Israeli trade union Histadrut has to be emitted of the international trade union bodies.

The motion of the General Confederation of socialist trade union (ABVV-FGTB) on the oppression of the Palestinian people and the attitude of the Israeli trade union Histadrut, was almost unanimously approved by the Congress of the FGTB.
It means that the FGTB finds that there is no place for the trade union Histadrut in international trade union bodies as the Israeli trade union does not distance itself from the politics of the Israeli government.

Trade union Histadrut has to condemn:
- Israeli colonies
- The apartheid policy against the Palestinian people
- The WALL
- The use of prohibited weapons (phosphorus)
- The blockade of the Gaza Strip

The Palestinian counterpart of Histadrut, has condemned the firing of rockets on Israeli towns.

The representatives of the FGTB must therefore to encourage comrades in other countries to increase pressure on Histadrut.

The Russell Tribunal has recently condemned Israel for the violation of more than 40 international agreements.
It is also condemned the European countries and the United States for their tacit complicity.

To keep silence is criminal. As trade unionists we can not make ourselves guilty. We must assume our responsibilities.
Even the progressive Jews in Israel are asking the Europeans to increase their pressure, because they themselves suffer from the extreme right-wing government in Tel Aviv who decides everything.

The recent violent events in Gaza show once again that international response is urgent, both for humanitarian and politic as trade union reasons.

Belgische vakbonden
STANDPUNT

Zwijgen is misdadig. We moeten onze verantwoordelijkheid nemen.

Expelling of an Israeli diplomat otraverdad — 16 juin 2010 — DUBLIN (AP) --

Ireland announced Tuesday it's expelling an Israeli diplomat in punishment for the Mossad use of forged Irish passports to assassinate a top Hamas official in Dubai.

israel has refused to confirm or deny its agents' involvement in the January slaying of Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. Dubai police said Israeli agents posing as holidaymakers in the oil-rich Arab emirate killed Mabhouh in his hotel room.

They said assassins using 32 fake passports — including eight depicting fictional Irish citizens — participated in the hit squad. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Ireland's national police force, the Garda Siochana, launched parallel investigations, but said their appeals for information from Israel fell on deaf ears.

"The misuse of Irish passports by a state with which Ireland enjoys friendly, if sometimes frank, bilateral relations is clearly unacceptable and requires a firm response," Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said as he announced the expulsion.

Ireland's two investigations received no cooperation from the Israelis, but nevertheless reached "the inescapable conclusion that an Israeli government agency was responsible," he said.

The Israeli embassy in Dublin includes four diplomats and two security officials. Both Ireland and Israel declined to identify the official facing expulsion by name or position, but The Irish Times reported it was one of the security officials.

Martin said the official was chosen for expulsion to send a symbolic message, and the Irish investigations found no evidence that any of the embassy staff was involved in the conspiracy.

"The official concerned is not accused or suspected of any particular wrongdoing," Martin said. "The official concerned is a victim of the actions of the state they represent."

Martin condemned Israel's assassination of Mabhouh.

"Many allegations have been made against Mr. Mabhouh which, if true, would categorize him as a committed terrorist," Martin said. But Ireland "does not believe that states should fight terror with terror. As a matter of principle, Ireland opposes extra-judicial killings. We believe that states have a duty to operate according to the law and to respect that way of life that terrorists seek to destroy."

Martin's aides said this was the first time Ireland has expelled an Israeli official. It last took such action in the mid-1980s against Russian officials suspected of spying activity on behalf of the former Soviet Union.

Israel's ambassador to Ireland, Zion Evrony, said he was summoned Tuesday to the Department of Foreign Affairs to be told of the expulsion.

Earlier this month Israeli commandos seized an Irish-run vessel trying to run aid into Gaza Port. All the Irish citizens aboard, including former UN humanitarian official Denis Halliday and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire, were arrested and deported.

The Dubai assassins also used fake passports from Britain, Germany, France and Australia. British officials determined that Israeli officials stole the identities of real British citizens, but Martin said all eight Irish passports involved fake identities. He said six of the forged Irish passports used real numbers assigned to real Irish people with different names, while two others were total fabrications.

Australia expelled an Israeli diplomat May 24 after concluding that Mossad was involved in forging four Australian passports.

Britain expelled an Israeli diplomat in March after reaching the same conclusion about 12 fraudulent British passports used by the alleged assassins.

The governments of France and Germany have yet to announce conclusions of their own investigations.

Due to the Flotilla: Business people in Europe: "We are prohibited from doing business with you"

[Translated by Dena Bugel-Shunra*]

Exclusive from Yehuda Talmon: "Companies that had been proud of their ties with the Ministry of Defense delete them from the site, as this has become cause for terminating business relationships."

Israel businessmen have received about ten letters over the past two weeks from their colleagues in Italy, Germany, and Sweden, who demand that they do not manufacture dual use products - for civilian and security use.

The companies that sent the letters have declared that if they do not receive this kind of confirmation, their ethical codes oblige them to sever contacts with the Israeli companies, yesterday stated Yehuda Talmon, head of the Indpendent Contractors Organization (LAHAV).

"A phenomenon has started of members of the [LAHAV] bureau receiving communications from businessmen in Europe, including ones who have had commercial contacts with them for 10 or 20 years, who say that under the company's ethical code - it is prohibited from doing business with them if they produce dual-use products, directly or indirectly."

"Even if the company produces an assembly for a Ministry of Defense vehicle, it is ineligible as far as its client in Europe is concerned," stated Talmon. "That makes companies, which had been proud of their relationships with the Ministry of Defense as a sales promoter, delete them from their sites, as it is becoming cause for the severing of business relationships."

Last week Shraga Brosh, who heads the Financial Organization Coordination Bureau, received a letter from Rifat Hisharkiklioglu [sp?], chair of the Associagion of Manufacturing and Commercial Bureaus in Turkey (TOBB). In this letter he attacked Israel about the flotilla affair and called on Turkish companies to reconsider their business relationships with Israel. An inquiry by the Association of Industrialists found that this letter was sent to TOBB members.

As far as is currently known, this is the first directive sent by the leaders of the Turkey commercial sector to their colleagues against doing business with Israel. To date, Turkish businessmen assumed that they could continue doing business with Israel, despite political tensions.
"Governments come and go but business remains," was the popular adage in Istanbul.

Another development came from the security industries. An Israeli security industry which was negotiating a deal in Spain recently reported to the Ministry of Industry and COmmerce that the potential partner has been evading communication with it ever since the Flotilla affair. The Gamatronic company, which works in the field of electricity and produces, among other things, generators, last wee reported that a Swiss company cancelled a deal with her following the Gaza Flotilla events.

In the course of his visit in South Korea last week the Minister of Inudstry and Commerce, Binyamin Ben Eliezer, heard reports from additional companies about difficulties with communications about collaboration as a result of the Flotilla Affair. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce fears that the "quiet cancellations" of these transactions - the ones that do not make media headliens - will expand and damage Israeli commerce.

At the end of the visit Ben Eliezer told the members of the business delegation that "The State of Israel is under a political seige which will only get worse. In this period the government must help you, and we will help you. You will have to tell us about ever feeling you have about damage to business, embargoes, and politicization of commerce. We may be able to stop things before they snowball."

U.K. arrest warrant against Livni ARCHIVES

Published 00:00 14.12.09
Latest update 13:12 16.12.09

Foreign Ministry outraged over U.K. arrest warrant against Livni
Warrant submitted by pro-Palestinian groups over former foreign minister's role in Gaza war.

By Haaretz Service and Barak Ravid

The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday called for an end to the "absurd situation" in which arrest warrants were being issued to Israeli officials over alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

"Only actions can put an end to this absurd situation, which would have seemed a comedy of errors were it not so serious," said the Foreign Ministry, a day after it emerged that opposition leader Tzipi Livni had canceled her trip to Britain after a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Senior officials in Israel confirmed reports on Monday that a British court had issued an arrest warrant against opposition leader Tzipi Livni for her role in orchestrating Israel's military offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip nearly a year ago.

The request for the warrant was submitted by a pro-Palestinian organization.

British sources reported late Monday that though a British court had issued an arrest warrant for Livni over war crimes allegedly committed in Gaza while she served as foreign minister, it annulled it upon discovering she was not in the U.K.

Livni served as foreign minister alongside Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Ehud Barak during the Israel Defense Forces offensive in Gaza. The three figures comprised the "troika" of top decision-makers who charted the course of the war.

Earlier Monday, Arab-language media reported that Livni canceled her participation in a Jewish function in London after a warrant for her arrest was issued over part in last winter's Israel's Gaza offensive.

Israel's ambassador to London, Ron Prosor, conferred with officials in the British Ministry of Justice who told him that they were unaware of any criminal complaint or arrest warrant against the former foreign minister.

Yet, further inquiries by Israeli officials revealed that a warrant had indeed been issued.

Al-Quds Al-Arabi claimed on Monday that Scotland Yard advised the organizers of the Jewish National Fund conference in northwest London that the former foreign minister had canceled her scheduled address to the assembly over threats of a possible lawsuit by pro-Palestinian groups.

The Al-Quds Al-Arabi report also said that a group of about 100 anti-Israel protesters rallied outside the Hendon Hall Hotel on Sunday, just as delegates arrived at the JNF meet.

Livni's office said in a statement following the report that her appearance at the London event was canceled two weeks ago due to a scheduling conflict.

Livni's office also said that the opposition leader was proud of all the decisions she made as foreign minister during the Gaza war, an operation which she said achieved its goal of bring security to Israel.

A United Kingdom court two months ago deferred until further notice an appeal by local pro-Palestinian groups to issue an arrest warrant against Barak, who was visiting the country at the time.

A similar appeal was issued in 2004 against Israel's then defense minister, Shaul Mofaz. At the time, Mofaz was granted immunity from international arrest and trial - a precedent set by the British court, which until then had given such protection only to foreign ministers or premiers.

'Fuck Israel' (and her friends)
When they finally emerged and were able to tell their stories, many described horrific scenes of Israeli commandos shooting people in the head, of those tending the injured being shot in the stomach, of people bleeding to death while flotilla participants waved white flags and pled for help.

They also described being beaten brutally by Israeli forces, again and again – including those on ships that, in the U.S. media’s judgment, experienced “no violence.” A 64-year-old piano tuner from California, Paul Larudee, described hundreds of Israeli commandos boarding his ship. When he refused to cooperate with them, soldiers then beat him numerous times both on board the ship and after he was imprisoned on land.

Eventually he was taken by ambulance to an Israeli hospital. He wasn’t treated, however, and Larudee believes he was taken there because Israel didn't want media to see his black eye, pronated joints, bruised jaw and body contusions.

Marine veteran Ken O’Keefe described similar beatings while in Israeli custody. In his case, the public was able to see his bloodied, battered face in video clips and still images – but only on the Internet, since American mainstream media failed to report on his press conference or to publish the many still photos of his injuries.

Other gruesome photos available to the American public only on the Internet are of Emily Henochowicz, a 21-year-old American student whose eye and eye socket were recently shattered by Israeli forces. She has since had her eyeball removed, three metal plates inserted in her face, and her jaw wired shut.

Henochowicz was not on the flotilla; she was taking part in a nonviolent demonstration against the Israeli assault when an Israeli soldier shot a high-velocity teargas canister into her face.

A Swedish citizen standing with Henochowicz said, “They clearly saw us. They clearly saw that we were internationals and it really looked as though they were trying to hit us. They fired many canisters at us in rapid succession. One landed on either side of Emily, then the third one hit her in the face.”

Henochowicz is not the first to have been shot by such a canister.

But she's the first one to lose her left eye.
